Toshiba N300

From Computing Classics Wiki

Toshiba N300 is a hard drive family created by Toshiba. It is Toshiba's NAS-grade hard drive line, primarily targeted at the retail sector. This family consists of rebranded Toshiba MN family models.[1] It competes with the Seagate IronWolf Pro and Western Digital Red Pro families.

History[edit | edit source]

The X300 family first begun in 2017, with its initial two models, the HDWQ140 and HDWN160.[2]

In 2017, the HDWN180 was released. This was shortly replaced by the HDWG180. The HDWN160 was also largely replaced by the HDWG160.

In 2018, the first helium models were introduced, namely the TOSHIBA HDWG21C and TOSHIBA HDWG21E.[3]

In 2021, the N300, along with the closely related Toshiba X300, received lower-binned versions of the Toshiba MG08-D family. Specifically, the N300 family received HDWG440, HDWG460 and HDWG480, all based on the Toshiba MN08-D, of which the 6 and 8 TB models are based on 1.6 TB platters, replacing all previous 4, 6 and 8 TB hard drive models such as the HDWR160 above. However, the HDWR440 remains on 1.33 TB platters in exchange for offering 512n, like its predecessor. The MN07-based HDWG21E was also replaced with the MN08-based TOSHIBA HDWG31E. In late 2021, the TOSHIBA HDWG51J was released, making 18 TB the family maximum capacity.

In 2024, the N300 received not only consumer models based on the MN10-D, namely the HDWG740UZSVA, HDWG760UZSVA, HDWG780UZSVA and HDWG71AUZSVA, but MN10-DS models such as the TOSHIBA MN10ADA400ES also started to be badged as N300 as opposed to plain Toshiba enterprise drive labels.

In April 2025, seven months after the MG11 was released, the N300 received the 24 TB models TOSHIBA HDWG82EUZSVA as well as the MN11-based TOSHIBA MN11ACA24TS.[4]

In February 2026, all models from 14 TB up received refreshed, MG11-based models, supplanting or outright replacing previous generation models depending on the region.

Products[edit | edit source]

All N300 hard drive models have an equivalent MN series NAS OEM product line they are based on. Prior to the MN10-D, the internal/speciality model had the standard enterprise Toshiba label and were not considered part of the N300 line. While these models are shown below, they are wrapped in brackets to indicate their non-presence in the N300 line. Starting with the MN10-D, internal-specialty model drives received a special -S suffix and are also badged as N300s.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The N300 is the only retail family to have any non-Advanced Format 512n drives; namely, both 4 TB models.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the N300's default SCTERC settings are always disabled, identically to the Toshiba X300 (though, like all SCTERC settings, that can be changed after spin up). Both Western Digital and Seagate have some level of timeout set by default.
