An example of a Toshiba part number on a Fujitsu label drive, here printed as "PART NO. HDEUR11GZA01".

This is a list of part number schemes used by Toshiba. The part number is identified as the string of characters starting with "HDE" or "HDK". It is specifically called the "PART NO." on Fujitsu label style drives, but is unlabelled on all other label types.

The part number is a Fujitsu drive parameter. However, since 2011, the part number's coding changed to be identical to native Toshiba.

Pre-2011 model numbers

Prior to 2011, the part number was split into three blocks. Also, prior to 2011, Fujitsu drives produced under Toshiba still used the Fujitsu style part numbers (for example, "CA07173-B48000LF").

2011 - present part numbers

Since 2011, the part number is concatenated.

Prefix: HD

All part numbers begin with HD.

Third letter: Consumer vs enterprise

The third letter is different depending on whether a consumer-oriented HDA, or enterprise HDA, is in use.

Code Type Example image
E Enterprise (Fujitsu HDAs)
File:TOSHIBA HDWR480 top lid and label view.jpg
K Consumer (Hitachi and Toshiba 2.5" laptop HDAs)

Fourth letter: Platform or family code

The fourth letter defines the platform code. This code's meaning depends on what the third letter was. If the third letter is a K, then this digit represents the form factor and z-height (7 mm, 9.5 mm, 15 mm, and for example, HDKCB on MQ01ABF050 and MQ04ABF100). If the third letter is E instead, then this digit represents the family (X300, N300, MG, and for example, HDELX, HDEPZ). It can be shared across compatible OEM and retail families.

Form factor codes

Code Form factor Example image
C 2.5" 7 mm (one or two platters)
G 2.5" 9.5 mm
D 2.5" 9.5 mm (4,200 RPM only)
B 2.5" 12.5 mm
F 2.5" 15 mm
F 2.5" 15 mm

Family codes

Code OEM family Retail family Example image
J Toshiba MG08-D None
L None Toshiba X300 (HDWR440, HDWR460 and HDWR480 only)
File:TOSHIBA HDWR480 top lid and label view.jpg
M Toshiba MN08-D Toshiba N300 (MN08-D rebrands HDWG440, HDWG460, HDWG480 only)
P Toshiba MG (except MG08-D) None
R Toshiba MC04 None
T Toshiba MD (e.g. MD04, MD06) Toshiba X300 (see L code for exceptions), and Toshiba S300 Pro
U Toshiba MD04-V Toshiba S300 (5,400 RPM)
File:Toshiba MD04ABA400V 20190619.jpg
W Toshiba MA04 None
X Toshiba MN Toshiba N300 (see M code for exceptions)

Fifth letter: RPM code or generation code

The fifth letter's definition depends on the third letter. If K, it is the same as the RPM code (even if the model number does not contain it). For example, all 4,200 RPM drives get A, 5,400 RPM ones get B and 7,200 RPMs get C. If the third digit is E, then instead, this letter defines the generation (of enterprise drive, which is also reflected on any binned relabels) and interface. Note that Toshiba MG08 and Toshiba MG08-D, despite being completely different, share the same generation code, and instead new family codes distinguish them.

Code Generation Interface Example image
Q 03 SATA
R 04 (Tomcat, <= 5 platters) SATA
S 04 (Tomcat-R, 6 platters) SATA
T 05 SATA
V 06 SATA
K 06 SAS
W 07 SATA
M 07 SAS
X 08 SATA

N 08 SAS
Z 09 SATA

Sixth and seventh digits: Unique code for capacity

The sixth and seventh letters are a unique code that depend on the capacity. These are different across generations, though are compatible within families.

Eighth letter: Customer

The eighth letter depicts the customer. While, in most cases, this is the same as the last letter of the drive revision (even if absent), there may be differences. These are recorded below.

Code Actual customer Expected code
Z Retail (applies to all retail families) A
G All non-retail enterprise HDA drives N/A

Ninth letter: Target market code

While the true purpose of this letter is not know, it appears to reflect the intended usage of the drive.

Code Target
C Retail (prior to 2018)
E Enterprise
K PCs
M PCs (DT02)
N NASes
P Performance
S Surveillance
