The current incarnation of the Western Digital Red family was launched in 2020 as a response from controversy as a result of undisclosed SMR being used in Red products. To allay concerns, the Red family was renamed Red Plus, and a new Red family was created designated entirely of SMR models only. Despite some praise for better marketing, the Red family has received criticism that SMR is inherently incompatible with RAID purposes that Red family drives would be expected to use, and calls have been made to discontinue all SMR NAS drives entirely.
