It was a 80 GB (though using a non-standard LBA count) PATA 3.5" hard drive, and succeeds the previous [[Hitachi HDS722580VLAT20]]; while both are mechanically similar, the HDS728080PLAT20 uses a new platform, Pathfinder, and can be distingusihed by lacking a raised dome above the spindle motor. The purely ExcelStor-badged equivalent model is the [[ExcelStor Technology J880]]; other similar models from other manufacturers include the [[ST380011A]], [[WDC WD800LB-xxDNA]]/[[WDC WD800BB-xxJHCx]]/[[WDC WD800BB-xxJKCx|xxJKCx]]/[[WDC WD800BB-xxFRAx|xxFRAx]]/[[WDC WD800BB-xxFJAx|xxFJAx]], and [[SAMSUNG SP0802N]]/[[SAMSUNG SP0822N|SP0822N]]. This model was succeeded by the [[Hitachi HDS721680PLAT80]], which is built on Pathfinder's successor platform, Pathfinder-II.
