It succeeds the previous [[Hitachi HDT725025VLAT80]], increasing the density to 250 GB/platter, and is part of the [[Hitachi Deskstar P7K500]] family. It is a PATA version of the [[Hitachi HDP725025GLA380]]. Like its contemporaries, the P7K500 attempts to compete with the growing 5,400 RPM lineups of competitors such as [[Western Digital Caviar GP]] with a 7,200 RPM spindle speed, sacrificing non-sequential performance for cooler and quieter operation. The HDP725025GLAT80, like other PATA models in the P7K500 lineup, represents the last of Hitachi's PATA drives; subsequent models would only be available in SATA, such as its successor, the [[Hitachi HDT721025SLA380]].
