The device shipped with a modified version of Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.7, stripped down to a modified version of [[wikipedia:Front_Row_(software)|Front Row.]] However, alternative operating systems can be installed on the box - either replacing the Apple TV software on the internal hard drive, or booting via the USB 2.0 port on the rear. Popular alternative operating systems for the device include Mac OS X Tiger, Leopard, and Windows XP (through an MBR emulator, such as NTATV).<br />

The system requires a compatible EFI bootloader - though it only checks if the firmware file is signed by Apple, from there alternative kernels and bootloaders can be ran.<br />
